CLASS A CDL PROGRAM

The Career Line Training Center is proud to offer a Commercial Driving License - Class A program. From Theory to Mock Testing Simulation, we can help prepare you to get this highly valuable type of driver's license.

CD1-Commercial Driving I (Theory)*- 40 Hours

Instructor:  John Dudenhoefer/Moderator:  Amy Tevis

COURSE OVERVIEW:   This course will cover the interaction between a driver-trainee and the commercial motor vehicle (CMV). The trainee will receive instruction in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs) and will be introduced to the basic CMV instruments and controls. CDL trainees will learn how to properly perform vehicle inspections, control the motion of CMVs under various road and traffic conditions, shifting and backing techniques, and how to properly couple and uncouple combination vehicles.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:  Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Recognize components of a combination vehicle.

  • Read gauges and instruments correctly and properly use vehicle safety components.

  • Conduct a pre-trip and post-trip inspection.

  • Understand shifting and maneuvering patterns.

  • Learn proper backing, docking, coupling, and uncoupling procedures.

  • Ensure their personal safety through visual search, vehicle communication, and speed and space management.

  • Identify hazards when driving at night or in extreme driving conditions.

  • Perceive hazards and know how to react without causing an emergency situation.

  • Recognize what to do in order to maintain skid control and recovery.

  • Distinguish which potential dangers are present at a railroad crossing.

  • Identify and diagnose out-of-service (OOS) violations.

  • Interact effectively with authorities during a roadside inspection

  • Properly handle and document cargo.

  • Recognize environmental hazards and potential compliance issues.

  • Complete a driver’s daily log and do detailed trip planning.

  • Address health and wellness issues that affect driving.

  • Document an accident/incident investigation.

  • Understand employee rights as a whistleblower.

  • Outline the drug, alcohol and medical requirements of a CMV driver.

COURSE OVERVIEW: Acquiring a clear understanding of what to expect on the road test portion of the commercial driver’s license exam.  Students will review pre-trip inspection, air brake testing, and coupling/uncoupling and will demonstrate driving skills on the practice road course.  The student will utilize proper communication techniques, visual search skills, hazard perception, and overall safe driving behavior.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:  Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Shift a commercial vehicle with a 10-speed transmission

  2. Recognize the expectations of the road test section of the commercial driver’s license exam.

  3. Demonstrate left and right turns at traffic lights, stop signs, uncontrolled intersections.

  4. Demonstrate two-lane change maneuvers to the left and right.

  5. Demonstrate safe driving in an urban area.

  6. Demonstrate safely approaching and maneuvering at an intersection.

  7. Demonstrate negotiating a railroad crossing.

  8. Demonstrate exiting/entering an expressway and negotiating curves

  9. Demonstrate a roadside stop and start

  10. Observe weight and height restrictions and how to adapt to such
